Ceramics residency · Inland Brittany

River clay,
shaped on site.

A former water mill restored on the banks of the Elorn, a wood-fired kiln built on site, clay harvested within ten kilometres. Three residents at a time, matter before gesture.

“We don't work clay that's been brought in. We work what we've dug out of the bank ourselves, trowel in hand, one September morning.”

The mill stopped grinding in 1961. The wheel has been turning again since 2019 — more for power than for the gesture now, but it still sets the rhythm of the days: water, clay, fire.

Every cohort starts with a site inventory before any production: which clay, which ash, which wood. The residency journal documents this step as much as the pieces that come out of it.

  • Clay harvested upstream and downstream of the millrace, sieved on site
  • Kiln ash returned as glaze, a closed cycle
  • Firewood from the upkeep of the neighbouring coppice
Current cohort — Autumn 2026

Three residents,
one river.

Twelve weeks, one shared kiln. Each resident arrives with a question about matter, and leaves with an answer in fired clay.

The millrace clay, alone

Three residents, one bet: work only the clay harvested on site, with no outside material at all.

Spring 2026

Ash and reduction

A series of glazes made entirely from local wood ash — a grey-to-green palette, never reproduced identically.

Autumn 2025

Two rivers, one firing

A collaboration with a sister residency in Puisaye — comparing two clays fired in the same kiln.
