Sculpture, ash
Maren Hoff
Maren builds wall reliefs from blended clays and glazes made entirely from kiln ash. Her first season (autumn 2025) laid the groundwork for a grey-to-green palette; this one pushes the reduction into near-black browns. “What interests me is that you can never order the same ash twice. Every firing is a colour that won't come back.”

First reliefs, blended millrace clay
Picking up the wall structure begun in 2025, this time with 30% local clay blended into her usual clay body — better drying strength than feared, with one surface crack on the largest piece.
6 Oct 2026Ash and river silica glaze test
Three test tiles prepared from ash from the previous firing, sieved to 80 microns. Test firing at 1280°C, downdraft. Two out of three turned an unexpected verdigris.
